Blephex

Blephex services offered in the greater Riverside, CA area

Over half of all patients have eyelid symptoms caused by inadequate eyelid hygiene.

Dr. Richard Bozner was the first Optometrist in Riverside County and the Inland Empire to perform the Blephex treatment since 2016.

BlephEx® treatments at Dr. Bozner's Vision Lab Optometry & Dry Eye Treatment Center, performed by skilled optometrists Richard Bozner, OD and Jullianne Dalton OD,  can gently clean eyelids and help relieve symptoms like red, dry, and burning eyes. What is BlephEx?

BlephEx is a treatment that unclogs and cleanses the eyelids. The treatment particularly focuses on the eyelash roots, where microscopic dead skin cells, bacteria, biofilm, and eyelash mites (Demodex) can accumulate, causing irritation and discomfort.

What problems does BlephEx treat?

BlephEx treats a range of symptoms associated with dry eye disease and blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), such as:

  • Dry eyes
  • Eye itching
  • Red eyes
  • Tired eyes
  • Burning eyes
  • Watery eyes

Because BlephEx thoroughly cleans the eyelids, down to the roots of your lashes, it can effectively relieve all of these symptoms right away. It’s often effective even where other treatments have failed.

What is the BlephEx treatment process?

During treatment, Dr. Bozner holds the BlephEx device in his hand and applies a soft medical-grade micro-sponge to the edges of your eyelid at your lash roots. The BlephEx device spins rapidly, dislodging impacted debris and deeply cleansing your eyelids. A Bruder heat mask is then placed onto you lids for two sessions of 3 minutes, followed by gentle meibonian gland expression with Collins Paddles.  This mild massage of the lids clears out the clogged meibum (oil) so new fresh oil can be released to the tear film.  This results in less evaporation of your aqueous (water) layer of the tear. AND LESS NEED FOR ARTIFICAL LUBRICANTS!

He swaps in a new micro-sponge and repeats the same process on your other eye. The BlephEx procedure only takes about six to eight minutes, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after.

What does the BlephEx procedure feel like?

You’ll get eye-numbing drops before the procedure, keeping you comfortable during the treatment. You might feel some mild tickling, but it’s not uncomfortable.

When should I start BlephEx treatments?

Dr. Bozner often prescribes BlephEx treatment for patients who come in with dry eye disease or blepharitis. But, with regular BlephEx treatments starting from a young age, it might be possible to prevent these conditions. BlephEx is safe for children as soon as they’re old enough to sit still for the short treatment sessions.

How often do I need BlephEx?

BlephEx is like teeth cleaning in some ways. You need teeth cleaning to kill harmful bacteria a couple of times a year, and your eyelids need the same type of ongoing maintenance to avoid detrimental bacteria buildup.

In general, most patients need BlephEx once every six to twelve months. To maintain good eye health and avoid irritating symptoms, Dr. Bozner’s Vision Lab Optometry & Dry Eye Treatment Center recommends a personalized treatment schedule.
