What happens during comprehensive eye exams?

Like everything else at Dr. Bozner's Vision Lab Optometry & Dry Eye Treatment Center, comprehensive eye exams are customized for you. The exams start with a discussion of your daily life, including all the ways you use glasses or contact lenses (if any), your current medications, medical history, and general health.

Then, the team visually examines your eyelids and eyes using a lighted magnifier. You may need pupil dilation for this, which requires just a few drops in the eyes. Dilation widens your pupils to show the retinas at the back of your eyes.

Alternatively, advanced procedures like OptoMap® and optical coherence tomography (OCT) often enable retinal evaluations without dilation. OptoMap captures images of your retina, while OCT assesses the different layers of the retina.

Retinal imaging can detect eye health issues and early signs of health problems like high blood pressure and diabetes. The team evaluates your eye health and eyesight in many ways, including checking your:

  • Eye pressure (the level of fluid inside the eyes)
  • Depth perception
  • Color vision
  • Peripheral vision
  • Light response
  • Eye focusing
  • Eye teaming
  • Eye movement
  • Visual acuity
  • Eyeglasses prescription

You could also need other eye tests based on the results of your routine testing.

Are comprehensive eye exams different from contact lens exams?

Contact lens wearers need regular comprehensive eye exams with a few extra tests.

If you’re trying contact lenses for the first time, you’ll need special eye measurements, a tear film evaluation, and lens fitting during your exam.

If you already wear contact lenses, you’ll wear your contacts for the first part of the exam and then take them out. Contact lens exams take a little longer than standard eye exams.

How often are comprehensive eye exams needed?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends eye exam intervals based on age and eye health. Children need annual comprehensive eye exams until adulthood.

For adults with no eye issues and low risk of problems, they recommend exams at least every two years at ages 18-64 and annual exams after 65.

If you have eye health issues or vision problems or are at risk for either, you need more frequent eye exams. Generally, this means at least annual exams. The team recommends an exam schedule for you.
