Who needs senior and children’s vision care?

Everyone needs eye health and vision care, starting from toddlerhood. But your needs change over the years, so every age group might require a different approach to optometry.

Children need vision care starting from 6-12 months old. Seniors need tailored vision care starting around age 60.

Why is senior and children’s vision care important?

Dr. Bozner’s Vision Lab Optometry & Dry Eye Treatment Center believes that senior and children’s vision care is vitally important, with different drivers for each age group.

Senior vision care

Seniors are more likely to have refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) that cause vision problems.

In addition, seniors are more likely to develop eye diseases like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. About one-third of seniors have diabetes today, which can lead to problems like diabetic eye disease.

Seniors are particularly vulnerable to both eye health and vision issues. Senior vision care can help prevent these problems and treat them promptly if they develop.

Children’s vision care

Children can experience many different eye issues as they grow up. The most common vision issue is myopia, which affects about 9% of school-aged children and 30% of adolescents today.

In addition, kids need comprehensive eye health monitoring. Many eye problems, like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes), can adversely affect a child’s school and home life. Children’s vision care screens for these issues and provides immediate solutions when your child needs them.

How often should I see the doctor for vision care?

The American Optometric Association recommends annual eye exams for children starting at school age. They suggest the same frequency for seniors, starting at age 60.

However, your annual eye exams are mainly a status check-up in which the team ensures you're not having any new issues. They can update your prescription during this annual exam and recommend treatment plans as needed.

But, if you or your child have any new eye problems, like difficulty seeing in the classroom, a decrease in night vision, or fuzzy vision, it’s essential to schedule a visit at Dr. Bozner’s Vision Lab Optometry & Dry Eye Treatment Center as soon as possible.  Most eye problems are easily treated on-site so you can return to your life immediately.
